What to eat in Asia on a family Holiday?

Every time the three of us visit Asia, we triple in size. I cannot emphasize how delicious the food is.

Arabic ice creams in Dubai

Whether it is noodles in the streets of Bangkok or a kebab in the streets of Turkey, every mouthful of Asia is a sensory delight. For adults, the food is simply extraordinary. For children, you’ll need to use good judgement with a sprinkling of caution.

When travelling to Asia with kids, bear in mind, peanuts and other common allergens such as shellfish and dairy are liberally used in Asian cuisine. Ingredients are almost never clearly listed on many items so the onus lies completely on you to ensure what goes in your kiddo’s tummy.

In countries like Thailand and India, food can be extremely spicy for the little tummies. Places like Japan and South Korea offer flavorful and slightly less spicy food which may be more popular with your children. In Seoul, children will enjoy the delicate cuisine of unique flavors.

How to stay safe in Asia while traveling with kids ?

Under cherry blossoms in Kyoto, Japan
  • Traffic is obnoxious in almost all of Asia so be careful. Let alone car seats, you’ll notice even seat belts are missing in some countries! At the same time remember Asia has some of the world’s most cleanest and technologically advanced countries such as Singapore and Japan.
  • Carry sunscreen and stay hydrated as the humidity and heat of tropical Asia can be tough for those not used to it.
  • The locals and hotel staff almost always go out of their way to help outsiders.
  • In Asia, if you intend on public display of affection, be ready to be stared at. Be mindful of local customs and traditions as locals can quickly feel offended.
  • Give raw fruits and vegetables to kids only if you are certain about the source and hygiene levels.
  • Having said that, don’t miss out on some authentic experiences of Asia because of paranoia either. Such as sipping on tender coconut juice on white sand beaches. As a reader of Three Tickets Please, I trust you are smart enough!
  • N enjoyed a wide selection of local tropical fruits in upscale hotels. Lots of luxurious resorts are nestled among scenic wonders from beaches to jungles  – so use caution accordingly.
  • Carry mosquito repellants and check CDC websites or talk to your child’s pediatrician to know which vaccines to take before heading to Asia with kids.

A mix of Common sense and parental instincts is a must when traveling to Asia with kids. Bear in mind that Asia is an eclectic mix of extremely modern and surprisingly traditional elements. One minute you are in Maglev trains of Japan and the next you are feasting on a 1000 year old recipe from an adorable grandma in India.
