9 Insanely gorgeous places in Iceland
When I thought of writing about the most beautiful places in Iceland, I didn’t really have to ‘think’. Watching the carelessly drifting clouds getting kissed by green mountains was inspiration enough.
Unlike the soft slopes of Swiss villages, Iceland is blessed with ruggedly handsome sights. It is a land of unparalleled scenic wonders, where glassy chunks of ice float on black sand beaches and teal blue lakes nestle in crimson craters.
Just as the scenic places in Norway, took our breath away, these gorgeous and photogenic spots in Iceland will cause a Scandinavian storm in your camera!
As kids you probably read stories of unicorns galloping over rainbows and mysterious caves hidden behind curtains of waterfalls. Those fantasies come alive when you travel to Europe with your own kids! Packed with most beautiful places in Iceland, this post shows what you cannot miss on your Icelandic adventure !
Most beautiful places in Iceland :
1. Strokkur
If I am starting a list of most dramatic places in Iceland then I have to begin with Strokkur. Here the earth’s cauldron erupts with its own brand of violent beauty, shooting steam and boiling water into the heavens. This little geyser puts on a spectacle every 5-10 mins and appears to enjoy an audience!
2. Skogafoss
One of the most beautiful places in Iceland is Skogafoss. It is a majestic waterfall located in the Southern coast of the island nation. You may have seen countless waterfalls in your life but Skogafoss captures your imagination unlike any. Like a wide curtain of water tumbling down from the skies, this waterfall is a must see place in Iceland.
3. Elf Houses at Skogar Museum
One unique thing to do in Iceland is to visit elf houses. These tiny homes appear to have sprung right out of some magical fable. About a hundred years ago, Icelandic people lived in these turf houses to protect themselves from the harsh climatic conditions of this windswept country. Skogar is about a minute away from Skogafoss, so don’t miss it! A beautiful cultural insight into the lives of early Icelanders.
4. Cliffs of Dyrholaey
Most people who visit Iceland just go around the Golden Circle and head back, which is a pity because many of Iceland’s scenic wonders lie in it’s Southern Coast.
Wild waves which have travelled uninterrupted all the way from Antarctica to Iceland, can be seen from these stunning cliffs. The drive up to these cliffs is an adventure in itself. We got to see gorgeous Puffins and other aquatic birds. Dyrholaey is the whole package – scenery, wildlife and adrenaline!
5. Reynisfjara
The black sand beach at Reynisfjara with its monsterous Atlantic waves makes a powerful combination. On the shores of Reynisfjara you suddenly become aware of your every breath making you feel really alive. There is something about this place that I cannot describe, perhaps it is the potent mix of peril and beauty.
6. Kerio
Kerio is one of the most visually striking spots in Iceland. It is a huge crimson crater filled with emerald waters, how could it not be beautiful? With its majestic beauty it implores you to linger around. It’s a photographer’s delight!
We really had a hard time leaving the place. Go around it, maybe tiptoe over the edge of crater or step inside it – the whole place is so intriguing, it makes you curious like a cat!
7. Thingevellir
Thingevellir national park on the surface looks like any other landscape in Iceland. But it has a special geological significance. Like two best friends drifting apart after a rift, here the tectonic plates of Europe and North America are being torn apart.
One of the most beautiful places in Iceland, Thingevellir Park is the only place on planet where you can see this divide above sea-level. Silfra Canyon is one of the most photogenic places in Iceland. You can literally swim between two continents.
8. Blue Lagoon: Beautiful Place in Iceland
Aah… here comes the most talked about place in Iceland! Blue Lagoon is a marvelous turquoise pool of geothermal waters that has become the symbol of Iceland in some ways. Located just 20 minute drive from Keflavik International airport, this scenic place in Iceland is very convenient to include in your Icelandic itinerary.
9. Basalt Columns
When we talk about picturesque spots, we often think of green meadows or turquoise beaches. How about grey cliffs of Basalt that make geometric patterns by a black beach? Yes Iceland’s unique landscape makes these hexagon columns one of the most unusual places in the country.
So when you are in Iceland, witness the marriage of lava and snow, swim between continents or let handsome horses whisper Viking sagas to you. The list of authentic and uniquely Icelandic experiences never ends
Hope you enjoyed reading our selection of Iceland’s most scenic spots. Which ones stole your heart ? Let us know in comments below !

Do u know any other tour organizer other than visitor?
We don’t want self drive option
If you don’t want to drive, then Try ‘Iceland Guided Tours’ tour company. They will organize a customized tour depending on your preferences, They usually start from Reykjavik but if your hotel is elsewhere they will pick up from there as well. Get in touch with them to get more details, Hope you have a great trip to Iceland!
Are 7 days enough for Iceland?
Is weather suitable in 3rd wk of April?
We spent a week in Iceland and felt it was perfect. We covered lots of iconic and gorgeous spots within the country. If you are really keen on Iceland’s Ring Road which is approximately a total of 1400 kms or close to 850 miles then you may need 10 days to cover it all. We skipped the Ring road itinerary and charted our own course of favorite spots as those mentioned in the blog post.
Iceland is a very very cold country. Even in summer. So 3rd week of April will be extremely cold, you may not see as much greenery as some of our images show (We went in summer – August). The roads may be slippery and weather will still be very cold. Expect a high of 4 degrees Celsius in April! But the good thing is the days will be bright and longer hours of sunshine and you still have a chance to catch those elusive Northern Lights in April! 🙂 Hope you have a great trip , feel free to ask more details!
Hey,
What would be a good lodging option that would be centrally located to visit all the above places? Did you use any particular tours you would recommend?
Thanks.
Hi Sunayana,
Iceland is a small island country and most people (including us) usually drive along the periphery to explore it. So that means changing accommodation as you proceed along the road trip. We stayed at 3 different places during our week in Iceland.
You can stay in Reykjavik and explore most of the sights that are on the Golden circle route (Thingevellir national park, Kerid, Strokkur and Gulfoss) If you want to spend more time in South Icleand then base yourself in the town of Vik.
We didn’t use any tours as we rented a car from airport and drove across Iceland. You can check Viator if there are any tours that suit your budget and select a customized itinerary. Am sure you’ll find many. Hope that helps!
